RED CARTER SWIMWEAR

Meet the Designer: Red Carter

Born in Santa Ana, California, designer Red Carter studied at the Otis/Parson School of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Growing up in Southern California, Red Carter was constantly surrounded by the lifestyle of the beach, an experience which would give him invaluable insights into swimwear fashion in later years.

Before becoming a designer, Red was a competitive swimmer and also a record-breaking sprinter, diver and water polo player. After his sports career ended however, he entered the entertainment industry where he featured in commercials, did voiceover work, and had small movie roles. Red Carter has always been an entertainer at heart, but his favorite role has always been a fashion designer.

Red’s fashion career began in San Francisco, where he worked at Esprit under the direction of Suzy Tompkins. He then moved back to Southern California and held positions with Guess Jeans, the Marciano Brothers, Rampage, Mossimo, Victoria’s Secret, Linda Wachner, and eventually Oscar de la Renta.

The results of Red Carter's vast experience have culminated in the understanding of fit, form and function, unparalleled in the swimwear industry. His use and understanding of detailing, which he contrasts with bold, expressive prints, sets him apart from all other swimwear designers. Every swimsuit that Red Carter makes has a signature red button on the back which serves as Red's personal trademark.

When Red moved to South Beach, Florida in 2003, he immediately noticed that something was missing from Miami’s beaches. He watched hotel after hotel rise and be remodeled. However, for all the important designers of the world that came to South Beach, none of them ever stayed. Then and there, Red Carter decided that he would be the voice of an emerging culture and would create a product that embodied the attitudes and lifestyles of Miami and South Beach.

Today, the Red Carter Collection is inspired by Red’s impressions of Miami’s culture and lifestyle. Into his designers he incorporates the bold prints he sees on the beach and styles that transcend from day to night. Red tries to use the contrasting cultural influences of Miami to express the melting pot of South Beach style. With Miami’s expanse of international residents, Red is continuously inspired by the rich colors and architectural landscapes of this evolving metropolis.
